COLUMBUS — The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science celebrated the athletic and academic achievements of Tanilya Clark last week, hosting a signing day event as she committed to the track and field program at Rhodes College.
Clark will compete for the Lynx in the Southern Athletic Association at the NCAA Division III level.
“I chose Rhodes academically first,” Clark emphasized. “They have strong academics, and then I went on my visit, and my hosts were super nice. The team and the support from the coaches, mainly that was it. I knew it was going to be a good place.”
In addition to her athletic achievements, Clark was the recipient of the prestigious Gates Scholarship, a full-ride award given to 750 students out of more than 48,000 national applicants.
At MSMS, Clark was one of the top performers for the track and field team. She recorded three individual 1st-place finishes at the Super Regional competition in Olive Branch last month, and contributed to the team 4×100 relay championship as well.
Clark was named the Most Valuable Player for her performances.
“It’s really exciting, signing with any NCAA program is a huge accomplishment,” said MSMS track coach Madison Jones, remarking on Clark’s athletic and academic career. “It’s a really competitive conference, and Rhodes is a really good school. They placed top 3 in the indoor and outdoor championships, and had an athlete place top 10 at nationals this year. They’re really strong academically as well, so I think it’s going to be a great fit for Tanilya. She’ll make an immediate impact on the team.”
