The hits kept coming for Mississippi State men’s basketball on Monday.
Guard/forward Andersson García, perhaps the Bulldogs’ best bench player this past season, announced on Instagram he would be entering the NCAA transfer portal.
García is the eighth scholarship player to leave MSU since coach Ben Howland was fired March 17 and Chris Jans was hired March 20. Guards Shakeel Moore, Rocket Watts and Camryn Carter and forwards D.J. Jeffries, Javian Davis, Derek Fountain and Alden Applewhite have already exited.
“I would like to thank my teammates, fans, alumni, Coach Howland, (assistant) Coach (Korey) McCray and Mississippi State University for allowing me to be a part of their family,” García wrote. “I have also enjoyed getting to know Coach Jans and his staff and know the future is bright in Starkville.
“My two years at MSU have taught me valuable lessons both on and off the court.”
García averaged 4.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game in 14.7 minutes per contest. He started the Bulldogs’ final three games — against South Carolina and Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference tournament and against Virginia in the NIT.
García, who shot 54.4 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from 3, was one of Mississippi State’s best defenders.
But now, he’ll be looking for a new destination. García must sign with another school by May 1 to be eligible to play next season.
