The Mississippi State softball team swept through the first two days of The Snowman (Alex Wilcox Memorial) Tournament at Nusz Park in Starkville.
The Bulldogs (16-3) beat Alcorn State 8-1 to improve their record to 3-0 across Friday and Saturday after beating UAB 16-6 on Friday and 5-0 on Saturday.
Against the Braves on Saturday evening, senior first baseman Fa Leilua went 3 for 3 with a home run and drove in two runs to lead Mississippi State.
Leilua hit a two-run shot in the second as the Bulldogs scored in all six innings in which they came to the plate.
Freshman shortstop Madisyn Kennedy walked with the bases loaded in the first inning and singled home a run in the fourth.
Four different pitchers saw the mound for the Bulldogs, with Troy transfer Annie Willis picking up the win with a scoreless inning of work.
Mississippi State will face Alcorn State again at 12:30 p.m. Sunday before wrapping up the tournament against UT Martin at 3 p.m. at Nusz Park.
Mississippi State 5, UAB 0
Junior Emily Williams tossed a complete-game shutout as the Bulldogs blanked the Blazers 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Williams struck out eight and allowed just two hits and three walks in seven innings of work while the Bulldogs’ offense supported her nicely. Five different Mississippi State players drove in a run.
Junior designated player Carter Spexarth had an RBI single in the first inning, and sophomore right fielder Chloe Malau’ulu did the same in the third. Kennedy followed Malau’ulu by plating a run on a fielder’s choice.
Senior left fielder Candace Denis drove in a run with a double in the fifth, and sophomore Anna Kate Segars hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
