Mississippi State’s airtight defense finally showed some holes Sunday evening, and it could not have come at a worse time.
Junior midfielder Ilana Izquierdo, a transfer from Southern Miss, gave the Bulldogs the lead over LSU in the second half of a critical Southeastern Conference road game. But MSU could not hold on, conceding twice for the first time all season in a 2-1 defeat. The Bulldogs (6-3-2, 1-2-0 SEC) have lost consecutive games for the first time this year.
The Tigers (7-3-1, 2-1-0) had the edge in shots and corner kicks in a scoreless first half. MSU came out stronger after the break, and in the 57th minute, Izquierdo received a pass from Hannah Johnson at the top of the 18-yard box and fired away. The ball hit the underside of the crossbar and ricocheted into the net for the Colombian’s third goal of the season.
Six minutes later, though, LSU was gifted a penalty kick due to a handball in the box, and Tigers goalkeeper Mollee Swift stepped up and drilled it for the equalizer. LSU scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute on a counterattack as Sage Glover one-timed a shot past MSU goalkeeper Maddy Anderson. Prior to Sunday, the Bulldogs had allowed just five goals in 10 games.
MSU is back home Friday night to take on Tennessee.
