Despite missing Mississippi State’s 4-3 victory at Memphis last Wednesday, Bulldogs senior Nemanja Malesevic captured his first Southeastern Conference Player of the Week award after helping MSU defeat North Florida and Virginia Commonwealth over the weekend.
Malesevic held down the No. 1 singles spot for most of last season, but opened this year at No. 2 behind Petar Jovanovic. He returned to the top of the Bulldogs’ lineup against the Ospreys and the Rams, and came back from a set down to defeat former MSU player Jonas Hartenstein 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 against North Florida.
Against VCU, Malesevic teamed with Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes for a 6-2 win in doubles, helping the Bulldogs (7-3) take the opening point. He then defeated the Rams’ Matisse Bobichon 6-1, 7-6(6) in the decisive singles match.
The native of Bosnia and Herzegovina became the first MSU player to be honored as SEC Player of the Week since Florian Broska in 2021. The Bulldogs return to action on Feb. 25 at Tulane.
