Trey Fort’s tenure in a Mississippi State uniform could not have started much better, but injuries and inconsistency marked the back half of his season. Fort, who has already attended four schools in as many years, is now in the transfer portal, On3 Sports reported Wednesday morning.
Fort grew up in Jackson and began his collegiate career at Tennesee-Martin, where he made 11 appearances off the bench and averaged 2.7 points per game. He then returned to Mississippi and played the 2021-22 season at Copiah-Lincoln Community College before transferring to Howard College in Texas for 2022-23.
After averaging nearly 25 points per game at Howard, Fort came on board at MSU, where he was expected to provide the Bulldogs with much-needed outside shooting. And in his debut in the maroon and white, he delivered with 21 points on 5-for-10 from 3-point range as MSU defeated Arizona State.
Fort started the Bulldogs’ next six games as well, but that opening night performance proved to be his peak. He scored 13 points in a loss at Kentucky on Jan. 17, but injured his shooting hand against Auburn 10 days later and hardly played at all after that. In total, he averaged five points per game on 35 percent shooting from behind the arc.
MSU is expected to have plenty of guard depth next season, even after losing Fort and Dashawn Davis. Josh Hubbard burst onto the scene as one of the best freshmen in college basketball this year, and Shakeel Moore can return for one more year if he so chooses. The Bulldogs also will get Shawn Jones Jr. back and are adding an exciting freshman combo guard in Dellquan Warren.
