Two of Mississippi State’s three freshmen on the Bulldogs’ 2023-24 roster are now in the transfer portal, with point guard Mjracle Sheppard announcing her intentions to transfer Thursday.
Sheppard grew up in the Seattle metropolitan area but attended Montverde Academy in Florida, becoming a top-100 prospect in her class. She chose MSU over offers from Florida, Georgia and Alabama, among others, and made an instant impact on defense during her first year in Starkville. Although she started just one game and played an average of 17.7 minutes per contest, Sheppard was second on the team with 48 steals.
Never a significant threat on the offensive end, Sheppard averaged five points per game and scored in double figures just three times, with a season-high 14 points early in the year against Jacksonville State in her lone start. She recorded seven steals in a game against Kennesaw State, six in the Southeastern Conference opener against Vanderbilt and six more in an upset win in late January over LSU.
Sheppard held Tigers point guard Hailey Van Lith — who is now in the portal herself — to a mere four points on 1-for-6 shooting in the Bulldogs’ victory.
MSU’s other freshman guard, Jasmine Brown-Hagger, entered the portal last week, and forward Nyayongah Gony announced her intention to transfer before the Bulldogs competed in the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament.
