Mississippi State women’s basketball has its second entry into the transfer portal as freshman guard Jasmine Brown-Hagger intends to transfer, a source with knowledge of her decision confirmed to The Dispatch.
Brown-Hagger, who grew up in Shorewood, Ill., played in 33 games this past season for the Bulldogs but saw just 8.8 minutes of action on average. She scored 2.1 points per game but exploded for a season-high 17 in 24 minutes in MSU’s win over Georgia Tech in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament.
A four-star recruit and the top high school player in her class out of Illinois according to espnW, Brown-Hagger had offers from Iowa, Michigan State, Illinois, Rutgers, Ole Miss and Alabama, among others. She now joins forward Nyayongah Gony in the portal.
Bulldogs head coach Sam Purcell brought in one of the top transfer classes in the country last offseason, with point guard Lauren Park-Lane, wing Darrione Rogers and forward Erynn Barnum all playing key roles. After a disappointing 2023-24 campaign that saw MSU lose five straight games down the stretch and fall short of a return to the NCAA Tournament, Purcell will surely be active in the portal again this spring.
LSU point guard Hailey Van Lith, who averaged 11.6 points per game this season, entered the portal Thursday, and she has close ties with Purcell. Van Lith played her first three collegiate seasons at Louisville, and Purcell was a top assistant with the Cardinals for the first two of those campaigns.
Jerkaila Jordan is returning to MSU for her final season of eligibility, but the Bulldogs will need a new starting point guard with the departure of Park-Lane. Mjracle Sheppard would be the top in-house candidate to fill that role and is an excellent defender, but still has a lot of room to grow on the offensive end.
