Mississippi State announced the hiring of Matt Holecek as the Bulldogs’ quarterbacks coach, the fourth new addition to Jeff Lebby’s staff on Friday.
Holecek and Lebby have worked together for the last four years, with Holecek serving as an offensive analyst at Ole Miss in 2020 and 2021 and a senior offensive analyst at Oklahoma the last two seasons. Before that, Holecek spent two years working with the offense at Missouri.
He worked with talented quarterbacks at all three stops, including Dillon Gabriel with the Sooners, Matt Corral with the Rebels and Drew Lock with the Tigers. Gabriel led the Big 12 this season with 3,360 passing yards and 30 touchdowns, after ranking second in both categories last year.
MSU will be ushering in a new era at quarterback as Will Rogers, who started 40 games over the last four seasons for the Bulldogs, is now in the transfer portal. Mike Wright is expected to return for his final year of eligibility, and Chris Parson saw action in two games this season as a freshman. In his introductory press conference, Lebby said he was looking to add a quarterback in the portal.
“Coach Holecek has had a hand in developing some of the country’s most successful quarterbacks in recent memory,” Lebby said in a statement. “His ability to mold quarterbacks along with his knowledge of and experience in our offense makes him a perfect addition to our staff.”
