SCOOBA — East Mississippi Community College announced the hiring of Juwan Simpson to Buddy Stephens’ coaching staff this week. Simpson has been a coach since retiring from professional football in 2015, coaching at the high school level in his native Alabama before joining his former team Calgary Stampeders in 2023 as a defensive line coach.
“Juwan brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding about what we are trying to do, and we are very fortunate to have him here at EMCC,” Stephens said. “He is such an awesome person with a professional attitude that makes his career path the sky’s the limit.”
The former Crimson Tide linebacker played at Alabama from 2003-06 before an eight-year career in the Canadian Football League. Simpson was an All-CFL linebacker at Calgary, winning Grey Cup championships with the Stampede in 2008 and 2014.
“I am excited to join this great football program, which exemplifies rich tradition and an unwavering commitment to winning under the leadership of Hall of Fame Head Coach Buddy Stephens,” Simpson said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a storied program and to be able to work with this talented coaching staff as we all look to contribute to the legacy of success that East Mississippi has firmly established.”
Simpson joins to help fortify a defense that struggled in 2024. The Lions finished 5-4, their worst season since 2010, allowing 20 or more points in five games.
