Mississippi State center Jessika Carter was named Southeastern Conference Co-Player of the Week on Tuesday after leading the Bulldogs to wins over Arkansas and Ole Miss.
It was her second such honor this season, having previously been awarded following the week of Dec. 11-17, when she had back-to-back-to-back double-doubles in wins over Kennesaw State, Jackson State and Memphis. Carter was also honored as SEC Player of the Week in November 2019 and December 2022.
Carter started SEC play with uncharacteristically poor performances in losses to Vanderbilt and No. 1 South Carolina, combining for 14 points on 6-for-18 shooting in those two games. With MSU in need of a win Thursday night against the Razorbacks in Fayetteville, Carter finished with 22 points and 19 rebounds, and also came up with a huge block on Arkansas’ final possession of the game to secure a 66-63 Bulldogs victory.
The double-double was the 35th of Carter’s illustrious collegiate career — the second-most among active SEC players and the third-most in MSU history. It was also her 11th career game with at least 20 points and 10 boards. The Bulldogs are now 7-0 this year and 17-0 under head coach Sam Purcell when Carter records a double-double.
Back at Humphrey Coliseum on Sunday, Carter poured in 23 points on 11-for-15 from the floor to help MSU pull away late against the rival Rebels. She was also a force on the defensive end as the Bulldogs held Ole Miss to just six points on 1-for-12 shooting in the fourth quarter and shut out the Rebels for nearly the final six minutes.
Carter and MSU (15-4, 2-2 SEC) are back in action Thursday night in Starkville against Tennessee.
