VICKSBURG — The New Hope softball team’s controversial protest paid off in a big way Thursday.

After the Mississippi High School Activities Association upheld the Trojans’ complaint about Vicksburg’s use of an illegal ball Wednesday and ordered Game 3 of the second-round Class 5A playoff series replayed, New Hope won Thursday’s decisive contest 9-5 to advance to the state quarterfinals.

The Trojans broke a 3-3 tie with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go on to the win. Vicksburg scored two late runs in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough.

Zoe Goodman drove in three runs for New Hope, and Conerly Moody drove in two.

Adi Dueitt pitched a complete game for the Trojans.

New Hope will face Saltillo in the quarterfinals Monday and Tuesday.

NEW HOPE — New Hope baseball run-ruled Canton 15-0 in Game 1 of its MHSAA Class 5A first-round playoff series on Thursday.

The Trojans scored nine runs in the first inning and three more in the second.

Game 2 is at 6 p.m. Friday at Canton.

Caledonia 19, Yazoo City 3

YAZOO CITY — Caledonia picked up a statement win Thursday, beating Yazoo City 19-3 in the opener of its first-round Class 4A playoff series on the road.

Game 2 is at 6 p.m. Friday in Caledonia.

Kirk Academy 11, Oak Hill Academy 6, nine innings

WEST POINT — Oak Hill Academy was eliminated from the MAIS Class 3A playoffs with an extra-inning loss to Kirk Academy on Thursday in West Point.

Oak Hill scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, but Kirk put up five in the ninth to earn an 11-6 win.

Drew Wright had a two-run single in the first inning for the Raiders.

Nettleton 18, Noxubee County 0, three innings

Nettleton 15, Noxubee County 0, three innings

NETTLETON — Noxubee County was swept in its MHSAA Class 3A first-round playoff series, dropping a pair of three-inning games Thursday at Nettleton.

Nettleton won Game 1 15-0 with seven runs in the first inning, five in the second and three in the third.

The hosts won Game 2 18-0 with a 16-run bottom of the second.

Pickens Academy (Ala.) 23, Snook Academy (Ala.) 0, three innings

Pickens Academy (Ala.) 17, Snook Academy (Ala.) 0, three innings

CARROLLTON, Ala. — Pickens Academy (Alabama) swept its opening playoff series, shutting out Snook Academy (Alabama) 17-0 and 23-0 in three innings Thursday.

In the 17-0 win, Bodhi Parham drove in six runs for the Pirates, who scored seven runs in each of the first and second innings. Aidan Johnson had four RBIs and a team-high three hits, and Sawyer Perrigin drove in three runs.

In the 23-0 game, Hayden Dyer led Pickens with four RBIs, and Perrigin and Will Noland had three. Five players each drove in two runs.

Pickens advanced to the third round of the AISA Class I playoffs.
