LEWISBURG — The Starkville High School baseball team took Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 6A second-round playoff series Thursday at Lewisburg, 2-1. The Yellow Jackets’ crucial win puts them up 1-0 in the series, and they will need to win either Game 2 or Game 3 to advance.
Kaiden Simmons led the way for the Jackets, picking up three hits on the night. The pitchers’ duel was won by Starkville’s Banks Perry, who threw all seven innings and only surrendered one run.
Starkville will host Lewisburg for Game 2 at 6 p.m. Friday.

Saltillo 9, New Hope 3
SALTILLO — New Hope was eliminated by Saltillo in the MHSAA Class 5A north state semifinals Thursday, 9-3.
Emma O’Bryant had two hits at the plate to lead the Trojans. Annie Woolbright and Conerly Moody each picked up an RBI at the plate for New Hope.
The Trojans finished the season with a record of 13-12.
Prep Baseball
Lafayette 10, New Hope 3
OXFORD — Lafayette took Game 1 of a second-round MHSAA Class 5A playoff baseball series with New Hope on Thursday night, 10-3. With the series now 1-0 in favor of the Commodores, the Trojans will now have to win Friday’s game to stave off elimination and win again Saturday to advance.
Blake Loper pitched a complete game for Lafayette in the victory. The Trojans led 3-0 after scoring three runs in the third inning, but the Commodores scored 10 unanswered to win.
New Hope will host Lafayette for Game 2 at 7 p.m. Friday.
Corinth 13, Caledonia 6
CORINTH — Caledonia was defeated by Corinth in the first game of a best-of-three series. The Cavaliers are now down 1-0 in the series and will have to rattle off two wins in a row to advance to the next round.
Caledonia will host Corinth for Game 2 at 6 p.m. Friday.
Prep Track and Field
PEARL — The MHSAA state track meets wrapped up Thursday with the Class 1A/3A/5A event at Pearl High School.
Columbus High School’s Cierra Crusoe won the Class 5A girls discus with a throw of 113 feet. Crusoe was second in the shot put.

The Falcons’ Johnasia O’Neal was third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.4 seconds.

West Lowndes’ Averi Sanders won the Class 1A girls 100-meter dash with a time of 12.95 seconds. The Panthers’ Quankeria Halbert was second at 13.56 seconds.
West Lowndes’ four-by-100-meter relay team of Sanders, Halbert, Kerrigan Clark and Keyona Brown was first with a time of 52.63 seconds. The quartet of Panthers also won the four-by-200 relay in 1:51.59.
West Lowndes’ Adrian Erby won the Class 1A boys triple jump with a mark of 40 feet, 1.5 inches.
On Saturday in Pearl, Caledonia, Starkville and the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science all competed in the MHSAA Class 2A/4A/6A meet.
For Caledonia, Tenyzia Lathan placed second in the Class 4A girls high jump, and Tre Bohannon placed fourth in the boys high jump.
Clara Hunt finished seventh in the girls triple jump with a mark of 33 feet, 4.5 inches. Micah O’Daniel was third in the boys triple jump with a mark of 42 feet, 9.5 inches. Caledonia’s four-by-800-meter girls relay team finished fourth with a time of 11:02.
Jacob Huff placed eighth in the boys 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.80.
Caledonia finished 17th among Class 4A girls teams with 15 team points. The Cavs boys were 11th with 22 points.
Starkville’s Jakayjia Patterson placed eighth in the Class 6A girls 100-meter dash with a time of 13.06. The Yellow Jackets also had their girls four-by-200-meter relay team place fifth with a time of 1:47. The boys four-by-100-meter team placed third in their race with a time of 43.42.
Omarian Owens finished seventh in the boys 400 meters with a time of 53.11. Sterling Scott placed fourth in the boys long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 2.5 inches and seventh in the boys triple jump at 43 feet, 9.75 inches.
Leroy Hollingshed placed seventh in the boys high jump with a mark of 6 feet. In the girls discus throw, Jayla Lindsey placed eighth with a throw of 90 feet, 7 inches.
Starkville’s girls finished 17th as a team with 14 points. The boys were 16th with 17 team points.
For MSMS, Hailey Manning won the Class 2A girls discus with a throw of 89 feet, 10 inches. Camille Newman was sixth at 70 feet, 2 inches.
The Blue Waves’ Bryce Harrison was second in the 3,200 meters at 10:45.73. Harrison was third in the 1,600 at 4:47.75 and third in the 800 at 2:10.10.
The MSMS girls team finished 19th with 13 points overall. The Blue Waves boys were ninth with 25 points.
Prep Tennis
Heritage Academy boys, Starkville Academy doubles team win state
VICKSBURG — The Heritage Academy boys tennis team won this week’s MAIS Class 4A championships in Vicksburg.
A pair of Starkville Academy doubles tennis players also enjoyed success. Harrison Holliday and Lizzie Skelton came out on top in mixed doubles.

Victory finishes second in ACAA state meet
Victory Christian Academy placed second in the Alabama Christian Athletics Association state competition this week.
Hayden Huff placed third individually, and Matthew Moore was fourth.
The team is coached by Jordan Lollar. Other members are Mason Hudson and Hunter Thomasson.
