LOUISVILLE — Despite showing early promise, Columbus fell, 50-13, against Louisville on Friday night. The Falcons struggled to overcome mistakes as Louisville capitalized on every opportunity, ultimately pulling away for the win. Columbus started strong, with running back Shaud Williams spearheading a solid opening drive.
Williams broke free for gains of 10 and 12 yards, helping Columbus march down the field. In just six plays, they completed an impressive 85-yard drive, highlighted by a 63-yard touchdown pass that gave Columbus an early lead.
Louisville responded quickly, aided by a few Columbus penalties. Quarterback Xavier Hunt led a balanced drive that ended with a 1-yard sneak to tie the game. Columbus’s next possession stalled, and after a quick three-and-out, Louisville took advantage of good field position, scoring again to make it 14-7.
Columbus briefly shifted momentum when cornerback Josiah Jones intercepted Hunt for a pick-six, bringing the Falcons within a point at 14-13. However, Louisville answered right back with a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown, regaining control.
Penalties and a costly fumble deep in their own territory made things worse for Columbus.
Louisville quickly extended their lead with a 14-yard touchdown pass, and a fumble in the Columbus endzone resulted in a safety, sending the Falcons into halftime down 29-13.
“We made too many mistakes, and they didn’t,” Columbus head coach Barrin Simpson said. “We’ve got to grow from this.”
In the second half, Louisville continued to press, starting with a 75-yard kickoff return that set up another touchdown. Columbus fought back, advancing to the Louisville 45-yard line, but their drive stalled as the Wildcats’ defense held firm.
The Falcons continued to struggle offensively, pinned deep after an intentional grounding penalty and a punt from their own 5-yard line. Louisville’s Korbin Sanders soon added another touchdown with a 16-yard run, widening the gap further.
Columbus showed flashes of potential late in the game with a strong kickoff return and a 30-yard pass to the Louisville 20-yard line, but penalties and miscues led to a turnover on downs, sealing their loss. Despite forcing a turnover late in the game, the Falcons were too far behind to mount a comeback
Faced with the growing pains of a young team experiencing a culture change, Simpson remains hopeful for his team.
“The key right now is just fixing those mistakes,” Simpson said. “We’ve got to become more consistent.”
Columbus will aim to bounce back next Friday when they host the Lafayette Commodores.
