The Columbus High School track and field team is competing in the state championships for the first time in three years.
The Falcons are sending four boys and eight girls to Friday’s MHSAA Class 5A championship meet.
The boys four-by-100-meter relay team of Jakaylin Lewis, Cameron Kidd, Tyrie Sherrod and Michael Mosley finished second at north state championships Saturday at Center Hill High School. Lewis, Kidd, Sherrod and Deion Williams will compete in the event at state.
On the girls side, Mashanti Saddler, Johnasia O’Neal, Christina Fulton and DJ Jackson finished third in the girls four-by-100 relay.
In the girls four-by-400 relay, Saddler, Jackson, Nylah Akujobi and Dariyah Webb finished fourth.
O’Neal finished first in the 100-meter hurdles, Jackson was third in the long jump, and Cierra Crusoe was second in shot put and fourth in discus.
Meyon Foster was third in the girls 300-meter hurdles.
Oak Hill tennis sends 10 to state tourney
Three Oak Hill Academy tennis players claimed MAIS Class 3A north state championships on Tuesday.
John Ross Craven won at boys No. 2 singles, while Jack Easterling and Kye Tate were victorious at boys No. 2 doubles.
The Raiders are sending seven other players to the state tournament next week in Ridgeland as well.
Allie Comer qualified at girls No. 2 singles, and Brindley Comer and Sydney Pierce advanced at girls No. 1 doubles.
Noah Brand and Brady Boyd qualified at boys No. 1 doubles, and Conner Freeman and Kate Wheeler advanced at mixed doubles.
New Hope’s East makes state semis
New Hope junior Hannah East qualified for the MHSAA Class 5A semifinals on Wednesday.
East posted a 6-1, 6-0 win in the quarterfinals. She will compete in the semifinals Thursday.
