STARKVILLE – West Point’s undefeated season and bid for its third straight Class 5A state championship was halted by an explosive Brookhaven offense Thursday night at Davis Wade Stadium in a 31-19 loss.
The Panthers utilized a 51-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jaden Allen and a 24-yard field goal to claw their way back from a 12-0 deficit in the second quarter. After Green Wave quarterback Colt Whitacre fired a 22-yard touchdown throw to Bryceson Hoskins to go up 19-10, Allen responded with a 57-yard touchdown toss to Dreamus Harron to make it a two-point game. Quarles put the Panthers on top with a 19-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and a pick-6 thrown by Quintin Thompson was taken home by Jeremy Bibbs to seal the game.
“Disappointment. A lot of disappointment, West Point head coach Brett Morgan said. “You have to tip your hat to them. Brookhaven outplayed us tonight. They outplayed us and I’m proud of my team. Sometimes that’s just the way the ball bounces you know. (We) had a heck of a year, came up short and we’ll be back.”
At the end of the game a West Point player was carted off the field and was taken to the hospital. Morgan did not want to identify the player but said he will “be OK.”
West Point ends its season at 13-1 while the Panthers improve to 12-2 and claimtheir second-ever state championship.
