The Commercial Dispatch has obtained the contracts for six of Mississippi State’s 10 assistant football coaches for the 2024 season via a public records request, and new defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler will be paid $1 million per year over the next three years.
Hutzler’s salary is a significant increase over the $800,000 that Matt Brock earned in the same role in 2023. He can also receive up to $10,000 annually in summer camp revenue and will receive performance bonuses if the Bulldogs reach the Southeastern Conference Championship Game (4 percent) or win it (8 percent).
He will earn an additional 8.3 percent of his salary if MSU makes a non-College Football Playoff bowl game, with incremental increases for appearances in each round of the CFP up to 25 percent for a national championship victory.
If MSU fires Hutzler for convenience, he would still be owed all of his remaining salary, but if Hutzler resigns, retires or takes an assistant coach position elsewhere, MSU would owe him only 50 percent of his remaining salary — and if he takes an assistant coaching job at another SEC school, MSU would only owe him 25 percent. Should Hutzler become the head coach at another institution, MSU would still be obligated to pay the entire remainder of his salary.
Offensive line coach Cody Kennedy is on a two-year contract that will earn him $750,000 for the 2024 season and $800,000 for 2025, well above the $475,000 the Bulldogs paid their 2023 offensive line coach, Will Friend. Safeties coach Matt Barnes will earn $550,000 in 2024 and $600,000 in 2025, also a substantial increase from Brett Dewhurst’s 2023 salary of $315,000.
Cornerbacks coach Corey Bell is also on a two-year contract, with a salary of $400,000 in 2024 and $450,000 in 2025. Unlike the Bulldogs’ other new coaches, Bell is actually making slightly less than the man he replaced — Darcel McBath earned $460,000 in 2023.
The two holdovers from MSU’s 2023 staff, wide receivers coach Chad Bumphis and defensive line coach David Turner, will make $425,000 and $460,000, respectively, the same as they each did last year.
All five position coaches, like Hutzler, can make up to $10,000 per year from summer camps and have the same performance incentives as the defensive coordinator. They also have the same stipulations as Hutzler if they are fired, retire, resign or take another job.
Contracts for quarterbacks coach Matt Holecek, running backs coach Anthony Tucker, tight ends coach John Cooper and special teams coordinator Cliff Odom are still being processed.
