CALEDONIA — Tuesday morning saw Caledonia baseball senior Zack Gorum sign his National Letter of Intent to play at Mississippi Delta Community College.
The right-handed pitcher has arguably been the ace for the Cavaliers (16-9, 5-5 in Class 4A, Region 1), with a 2.72 ERA this season and 61 strikeouts in 46.1 innings pitched.
After committing to play for the Trojans in mid-March, getting signing day out of the way before the postseason was perfect timing for Gorum.
“It’s a weight off my shoulders so I can just go play now,” Gorum said. “I don’t have to worry about anything. Now, it’s just play ball.”
Gorum has been as effective offensively this season for Caledonia, hitting .321 in 78 at-bats with 16 RBIs, four doubles and 16 runs scored.
Caledonia head coach Brad Hamilton will be handing Gorum the ball to begin the postseason as the first round of the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A state playoffs against Senatobia begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
“It gives us a great feeling going in when you got your guy throwing in game one,” Hamilton said. “It gives us the opportunity to go in and compete hard, see how it works out.”
The Cavs have one more regular season game left against Nettleton at 7 p.m. Thursday before playoff preparations begin.
“We’ve all been working together,” Gorum said. “We’ve all been playing well. We just got hot at the right time to get third place in district.”
