JACKSON — The Mississippi High School Activities Association announced the new regions and classifications after another realignment process on Tuesday, with several area schools impacted by the moves.
The biggest development is the realignment of Columbus, West Point, New Hope and Caledonia into a new Class 5A Region 1 district with Pontotoc and Lafayette.
New Hope and West Point have been district rivals since the realignment in 2022, but with two more local rivals introduced half of the Golden Triangle is now the center of Region 1. Caledonia and New Hope are old rivals as well as West Point and Columbus, the latter being a district matchup until a couple of years ago.
Other changes will see Starkville, a 7A school, compete in a district with Clinton, Germantown, Madison Central, Murrah and Oxford, meaning the closest competitor remains a two-hour drive away.
Noxubee County has moved back to the north into Class 3A Region 4, where it will compete with Aberdeen, Choctaw County, Nettleton and Winona.
West Lowndes will compete in the Class 1A Region 3 with Vardaman, Okolona and Calhoun City.
