Senior Hunter Carr went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead the New Hope High School baseball team to a 13-3 five-inning rout of Starkville and a sweep of their doubleheader on Thursday night in New Hope.
The Trojans (10-1) scored four runs in each of the first two innings to take command early. Carr belted a two-run double to right highlighted the first inning, while Brant Smith did the same to fuel the second-inning rally.
Dawson Lofton and Chance West pitched a combined two-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Trojans.
Ethan Pulliam and Kieran Coleman had RBIs for the Yellow Jackets and accounted for both of their hits.
New Hope 7, Starkville 4: Richard Guy sparked a four-run third-inning rally with a leadoff triple, and Gates Gerhart went 3 for 4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs as the Trojans won the opening game of Thursday’s doubleheader.
Starting pitcher Brant Smith went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for the Trojans (7-1).
Koby Livingston had two of the five hits for Starkville (3-5) and drove in two runs.
West Point 11, Choctaw County 1: Elijah Young scattered four hits over five innings, striking out seven to lead the Green Wave over the Chargers.
West Point (4-3) scored all of its runs during the fourth inning, and all 11 runs were unearned. A two-run triple by Jaylen Davis two-run triple and a two-run single by Ben Harrell highlighted the outburst, which was aided by three Choctaw County errors.
Cortlin Carter had two of the Green Wave’s six hits, while Tyrese Johnson and Jordan Fitzpatrick each scored twice.
Oak Hill 18, Rossville Christian 0: The Raiders drew 10 walks and took advantage of five errors to score 11 unearned runs in their three-inning rout of the Wolves in Rossville, Tennessee.
Cameron Dill scored three runs and drove in run without an official at-bat, while Garrett Edwards was credited with four RBIs. Brian Buchanan and Gunter Reed each scored twice for Oak Hill (2-6).
John Ross Craven pitched two innings for the Raiders, striking out five.
Oxford 13, Caledonia 0: Leadoff batter John Leyton Lewis had two of the three hits for the Cavaliers (2-6).
Softball
New Hope 2, Hamilton 1: Adi Dueitt tossed a three-hitter, striking out 12 and not walking a batter, as the Trojans edged the Lions.
Zoe Goodman doubled and scored on a single by Dueitt in the fourth inning to give New Hope (6-5) the lead for good. The Trojans scored their first run in the bottom of the first when Lexi McBrayer singled, went to second on a passed ball, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Kensley Woolbright’s sacrifice fly to center.
Goodman had three of the Trojans’ six hits.
Tennis
Heritage 9, Winston 0: The Patriots (2-0) dropped just one set in their shutout of the Patriots in Columbus.
Heritage will be back at home March 28 against Grace Christian.
