STEENS — Four Columbus Christian Academy baseball players were selected to Midsouth Association of Independent Schools All-Star teams.
Seniors Luke Phillips, Drake Shaw and Jackson Howard were selected to the seniors all-star team while junior Garrett Weathers was named a futures all-star for Class 2A and 3A
“All four of these young men are extremely athletic, multi-sport players and were very easy to coach,” CCA head coach Mike Bogue said.
Phillips was a versatile utility player, featuring on the mound and in a number of other positions. He finished his senior season with a .558 on-base percentage at the plate, and on the mound, he threw a no-hitter as opponents hit .178 on him for the year.
Shaw hit .448 as the starting shortstop for the Rams, scoring over two runs a game and recording a 1.320 OPS overall. He led the team in both stolen bases and runs scored. The senior also pitched for CCA, finishing the season with a 2.27 ERA.
Howard hit out of the four-hole, hitting .400 on the year with a 1.385 OPS. He averaged a stolen base and RBI per game for the Rams. All three seniors selected were key pieces to CCA’s starting rotation, Howard recording a 2.82 ERA with a .191 opponent batting average on the season.
Weathers, a transfer from South Lamar (Ala.), was CCA’s starting center fielder and hit in the two-hole this season. He was one of the better on-base leaders on the team with a .447 on-base percentage and benefited from Phillips and Howard hitting behind him.
The senior all-star game takes place on May 22 and the futures all-star game takes place on May 23 at Mississippi College.
“Coach Dave Harvey and I loved how ‘teachable’ these men were,” Bogue said. “… What a blessing it’s been for us to be with these guys everyday after school for baseball.”
