STARKVILLE — Chad Bumphis is coming home.
The former Mississippi State wide receiver was hired to coach his old position at MSU, the school announced Wednesday afternoon.
Bumphis spent the past two seasons as Utah’s wide receivers coach. He coached wide receivers at Austin Peay from 2019 to 2020.
“I’m fired up to be home!,” Bumphis said. “My wife Nataly, my son Ace, and I couldn’t be happier. I started coaching to specifically take this job. This is home and I’m fired up to get to work. Thank you to Coach Arnett for giving me this opportunity and bringing us home. This place is special and I’m ready to get to work.”
The Tupelo native helped the Utes post the Pac-12’s fifth-best offense, leading three receivers to more than 340 yards this season.
He also served as a graduate assistant at Utah in 2018, an offensive grad assistant at Buffalo in 2017 and the wide receivers coach at Iowa Wesleyan in 2016.
At Mississippi State, Bumphis set the program record for career touchdown receptions with and ranks second in career receiving yards at 2,270.
“Bringing Chad Bumphis back home to Mississippi State has been a key priority for us,” Arnett said. “His reputation and relationships in this state are unparalleled. He had a legendary career here as a player and has done a terrific job at each of his coaching stops. He brings experience, knowledge, and familiarity with Mississippi State, and we are proud to welcome him back to Starkville.”
Bumphis takes the vacated spot of inside receivers coach Drew Hollingshead, who announced Tuesday he would not return in 2023. Outside receivers coach and pass game coordinator Steve Spurrier Jr. is also expected not to be retained.
Bumphis’ hire was one of several on a busy day for Mississippi State, which elevated linebackers coach Matt Brock to defensive coordinator and hired Brad Peterson as the school’s associate athletic director for football administration.
