East Mississippi Community College football was ranked fifth in Tuesday’s new National Junior College Athletic Association poll.
The Lions were the preseason No. 1 team but fell to No. 5 with Thursday’s loss at Hinds Community College. Hinds entered the top 20 at No. 14 after being among the teams receiving votes but outside the rankings last week.
Hutchinson (Kansas) and Kilgore (Texas) both received 303 points, but Hutchinson earned the edge with seven first-place votes.
EMCC earned 214 points, 26 behind fourth-place Northwest Mississippi and eight above sixth-place Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Kilgore earned three first-place votes, third-place Butler (Kansas) earned five, and Gulf Coast earned the remaining one.
On Thursday, EMCC will host Pearl River, which is now receiving votes after beating Itawamba last week.
