The East Mississippi Community College football team lost a road game 49-42 to Holmes Community College (3-4) on Thursday in Goodman, and the Lions (4-3) are fading fast. EMCC has dropped its past two games — at home to Northwest Mississippi last week and now on the road at Holmes.
The host Bulldogs trailed 21-14 at halftime but used a 35-point second half to knock off the No. 8 team in the nation.
The ballgame was tied 28-28 at the end of the third quarter, and EMCC scored with 8:01 left to tie it at 35-35 after a Holmes score. But Martavius Dill ran for a go-ahead 66-yard score 18 seconds later, and Dylan Kelly scored from 50 yards out with 5:23 to go.
EMCC quarterback Connor Neville found receiver Jason Brownlee for a 29-yard touchdown with 3:03 left, but the Lions ran out of time on their last drive with possession at the Holmes 38.
Brownlee finished with touchdown catches of 12 and 29 yards, and running back Zias Perryman had rushing scores of 2 and 4 yards.
EMCC outgained Holmes 520 yards to 485 on offense Thursday.
The Lions return to action at Coahoma Community College (1-6) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17.
