OXFORD — Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart is entering rarified air.
The Utah native is entering his third year as the Rebels’ starting quarterback, having started 25 games over the last two seasons since transferring from USC prior to the 2022 season. Dart has thrown for 6,338 yards, 43 touchdowns and 16 interceptions and run for an additional 1,003 yards and nine touchdowns since 2022. His most recent game was one of his finest, as Dart completed 25 of 40 passes for 379 yards and four total touchdowns in a 38-25 win over Penn State in the Peach Bowl. The win secured the first 11-win season in program history.
Since 1997, Ole Miss has had just a trio of three-year starting quarterbacks — quarterbacks who started at least half of the team’s games in a given season — in Romaro Miller (1998-2000), Eli Manning (2001-03) and Bo Wallace (2012-14). Even Matt Corral, who finished seventh in Heisman Trophy voting his final season with the Rebels, was Ole Miss’ primary starting quarterback for just two seasons.
In his career as a college head coach and offensive coordinator, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has had just one quarterback under his tutelage for three seasons, excluding Dart: former USC star Matt Barkley, who was a four-year starter for the Trojans from 2009-12. Kiffin had two starting quarterbacks in his two seasons as USC’s offensive coordinator, was at Tennessee for a single season, had three different starting quarterbacks in his three seasons as offensive coordinator at Alabama and had two starters in three years at FAU.
Kiffin has, however, coached two other quarterbacks as a coordinator and head coach who started three seasons at their respective schools even if all weren’t under Kiffin. Here’s a quick look at those signal callers.
USC quarterback Matt Leinart
Leinart led USC to a 37-2 record over his three seasons as the Trojans’ starting quarterback, throwing for more than 10,500 yards and 99 touchdowns. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2004 and was a top-six finisher his other two seasons. His first two seasons as starting quarterback were under offensive coordinator Norm Chow. Kiffin was USC’s offensive coordinator Leinart’s final season in 2005, a year the Trojans averaged 49.1 points per game and lost in the BCS title game against Texas. Leinart threw for a career-best 3,815 yards, 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions and scored six rushing touchdowns.
John David Booty was USC’s starting quarterback in Kiffin’s last season as the Trojans’ offensive coordinator in 2006.
USC quarterback Matt Barkley
Barkley started four years at USC, his first with Pete Carroll as head coach. The next three were under Kiffin’s tutelage. Barkley threw 101 touchdowns under Kiffin — including a career-best 39 in 2011 (his third year as USC’s stater overall), a season he finished sixth in Heisman voting. In his final season and third under Kiffin, Barkley threw 36 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
As a little bonus, here’s a look at the three, three-year starting quarterbacks Ole Miss has had since 1997.
Romaro Miller
Miller threw 43 touchdown passes in his three seasons as the Rebels’ starter, including a career-best 18 in his final season. He led Ole Miss to a 7-5 record in his third season as starter.
Eli Manning
Manning was the starter immediately after Miller and set nearly every Ole Miss passing record over the ensuing three seasons. He threw 81 touchdowns in three seasons as the starter and led Ole Miss to a 10-3 season as a senior. Manning finished third in Heisman Trophy voting that year and was drafted first overall in the 2004 NFL Draft.
Bo Wallace
Wallace was Ole Miss’ starter from 2012-14. He threw 62 touchdowns and 41 interceptions and ran for 19 touchdowns over that span. In 2014, he led Ole Miss to a Peach Bowl appearance. He also helped orchestrate the Rebels to an upset of No. 3-ranked Alabama that year, throwing for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Wallace threw the game-winning touchdown to Jaylen Walton with less than three minutes to play.
