Following a wild overtime win over Arizona last week, Mississippi State opens Southeastern Conference play this Saturday against No. 14 LSU at 11 a.m. on ESPN.
The Tigers defeated the Bulldogs 31-16 last year in Baton RougeIn that game, the Bulldogs took a 13-point lead late in the first half and never trailed until the fourth quarter, but LSU outscored the visitors 21-0 in the final period.
This year’s Tigers team opened its season with a 45-24 loss to Florida State, which has since risen to No. 3 in the AP Top 25. LSU then rolled over Grambling State last week, 72-10.
Here is what to know and watch for as MSU looks to improve to 3-0 and get off on the right foot in SEC play.
What: No. 14 LSU at Mississippi State
When: 11 a.m., Saturday
Where: Davis Wade Stadium, Starkville
TV: ESPN
Betting line: LSU by 9.5
Weather: Mostly sunny skies with a high of 88 degrees and winds out of the northeast at 5 miles per hour, per AccuWeather
Records/rankings: The Bulldogs are 2-0 with wins over Southeastern Louisiana and Arizona, and are receiving five votes in the AP Top 25 and seven votes in the AFCA Coaches Poll. The Tigers are 1-1 and are ranked No. 14 in both polls.
Series history: LSU leads 77-36 with three ties. The Tigers have won the last two meetings, with the last MSU victory coming in 2020 — a 44-34 victory at Tiger Stadium in Mike Leach’s first game as the Bulldogs’ head coach.
Mississippi State update: The Bulldogs defeated Arizona in an overtime thriller last weekend, 31-24. It was a game in which MSU twice led by two touchdowns, but the Wildcats hung around and tied it on a field goal with five seconds left in regulation.
Running back Jeffery Pittman scored the go-ahead touchdown in overtime on a 29-yard screen pass from quarterback Will Rogers, and the Bulldogs’ defense stopped Arizona quarterback Jayden de Laura just short of a first down on the final play of the game. MSU also forced five turnovers, with linebacker Jett Johnson nabbing a pair of interceptions.
LSU update: The Tigers won the SEC West last year, falling to eventual national champion Georgia in the conference championship game. LSU led Florida State by three at halftime before allowing 31 unanswered points. Last week against Grambling State, the Tigers led by just four after a quarter but soon pulled away.
Dual-threat quarterback Jayden Daniels leads the offense under second-year head coach Brian Kelly. Daniels did most of his damage with his arm last week, throwing for 269 yards and five touchdowns, but certainly has the ability to hurt defenses with his legs as well. His top targets include Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas and Mason Taylor. Nabers was originally committed to Mississippi State before getting an LSU offer.
LSU players to watch: QB Jayden Daniels, WR Malik Nabers, RB Logan Diggs, LB Harold Perkins, DT Mekhi Wingo.
Prediction: The Bulldogs will be able to put up points against this Tigers defense, which definitely has its weak spots. But Daniels and the LSU offense will be too much in the end. LSU 34, Mississippi State 24.
