Mississippi State midfielder Ally Perry has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Perry recorded her third career assist with a corner service on the game-winning goal in State’s 1-0 win against Kentucky on Thursday night. She leads MSU in assists and leads all Bulldog freshmen in points.
“Ally has been improving throughout the course of the season. She has worked incredibly hard to show the quality she possesses,” Bulldogs coach James Armstrong said.
The Kentucky match was the Frisco, Texas, native’s fifth straight start and second game in a row with a point. For the season, she’s played in eight of 10 matches with five starts. She’s taken 14 shots in 533 minutes.
Mississippi State (3-4-3, 1-2-1 SEC) closes a three-match homestand against No. 13 Auburn (8-3-0, 2-2-0 SEC) on Thursday night. Kickoff against the Tigers is set for 6:30 p.m. CT, and the match will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
Women’s golf
Windy City Collegiate Classic suspended
The Mississippi State women’s golf team completed the first round of the Windy City Collegiate Classic before play was halted because of darkness in the second round. The Bulldogs will resume play at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
MSU was in a three-way tie for seventh with Iowa State and event host Northwestern, shooting 32-over when play was suspended. The Bulldogs were led by Hannah Levi and Blair Stockett who are tied for 27th, shooting 7-over. Levi was one of three players to eagle during the first day of competition where she eagled No. 15.
Freshman Julia Lopez Ramirez entered the stoppage tied for 34th after carding 8-over, while Abbey Daniel is tied for 55th with 12-over. Rounding out the Bulldogs scorecard is Valeria Mendizabal, who is tied for 60th at 13-over.
Teams will stay in their same parings for Tuesday morning’s completion of the second round. Following that, MSU will go straight to hole 10 and begin the third round.
Rodeo
EMCC men third, women fourth at UWA event
Highlighted by two first-place individual finishes, the East Mississippi Community College rodeo teams placed third in men’s competition and fourth on the women’s side during this past weekend’s UWA Rodeo Showdown hosted by the University of West Alabama in Livingston, Alabama.
The three-day NIRA Ozark Region event concluded Saturday evening at UWA’s Hines-Spree Rodeo Complex.
For the EMCC men, newcomer Clay Livengood NC) led the way by claiming top honors in tie-down roping with times of 9.5 and 10.3 seconds to earn 145 team points.
Matt Watt of Scooba tied for fifth place and earned 60 points in tie-down roping while pairing with Tanner Brown to claim fourth place and 140 points in team roping. The tandem posted a winning time of 6.1 seconds during first-round action.
Brothers Cade and Cooper Cowan advanced to Saturday’s short-go round in team roping for the Lions but did not register a time.
The Lions’ other 110 points were collected by Myles Neighbors for second place in steer wrestling. His performance featured a winning effort of 4.3 seconds during first-round competition.
Women’s scoring for EMCC consisted of Jaylie Matthews’ second straight barrel racing win to begin the 2021-22 Ozark Region schedule. With winning times of 15.47 and 15.56 seconds at UWA, Matthews garnered the maximum 180 points to collect her ninth Ozark Region regular-season barrel racing victory.
Missouri Valley College dominated the men’s competition at UWA with 945 team points. UT-Martin earned team runner-up honors, finishing 35 points ahead of EMCC.
Host West Alabama secured the women’s title with 405 points to place ahead of Missouri Valley (295) and Pearl River Community College (275).
The EMCC rodeo teams will return to action Oct. 14-16 at the Three Rivers College event in Sikeston, Missouri.
