Chad Bumphis is heading back to the University of Utah.
After coaching Mississippi State’s receivers the last three seasons, Bumphis has been hired to coach the same position group at Utah. He also coached the Utes’ receivers in 2021-22.
Bumphis, a former standout receiver at MSU, finished his career with more than 2,220 yards receiving and 24 receiving touchdowns, which is still a school record. The Tupelo native coached one of the SEC’s most dynamic pass-catchers this past season in Brenen Thompson. The senior finished the year with 57 catches for a school-record 1,054 yards and six touchdowns and was named second team All-SEC by the Associated Press. Thompson passed Fred Ross (2015), Mardye McDoyle (1978) and then previous record holder Makai Polk (2021) to cement his name in Bulldog history
After previously serving under Kyle Whittingham at Utah, Bumphis will now work for Morgan Scalley, who was promoted to head coach last month after Whittingham took the Michigan job.
“It is awesome to have Chad back in the fold with us,” Scalley said in a school release. “He has an energy and a passion for coaching that our wide receivers are going to love. He is an exceptional recruiter and evaluator, and his ability to teach and develop I have witnessed first-hand.”
