The Mississippi State softball team scored more runs in Saturday’s road game at No. 15 LSU than in its last three Southeastern Conference games combined. It still wasn’t enough to stop the bleeding on its conference losing streak.
The Bulldogs (24-21, 3-13 SEC), led the Tigers 4-2 through three innings. But LSU’s seven-run fourth inning proved to be the difference in its 10-4 win over MSU, marking the team’s 13th-consecutive SEC loss.
MSU starter Aspen Wesley cruised through the first three innings, but lasted just one out in the fourth, as LSU’s Ciara Briggs, Taylor Pleasants and Ali Newland each recorded RBI singles and Karli Petty added a bases-clearing triple to turn a two-run deficit into a five-run lead.
Petty added a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Wesley allowed 10 hits, seven runs, two walks and struck out one in her outing.
The Bulldogs took their lead on a pair of home runs, a three-run shot by Aquana Brownlee in the first and a solo home run by Chloe Malau’ulu in the second, chasing LSU starter Raelin Chaffin after 1 2/3 innings.
Alea Johnson threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, only allowing three hits and striking out one.
MSU will try to avoid its fourth-straight SEC sweep in Sunday’s series finale at 2 p.m. (SEC+).
