Former Mississippi State basketball player D.J. Stewart Jr. has been signed by the Miami Heat, the NBA team announced Tuesday.
Stewart appeared in six Summer League games with the Heat, including two during the California Classic in Sacramento where he averaged 7.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals while shooting 42.9% from the field and compling a +14 plus/minus as Miami won both games.
Stewart played two seasons at Mississippi State, appearing in 64 collegiate games and starting 50 for the Bulldogs, averaging 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 32.4 minutes while shooting 42.5% from the field. He finished with 792 career points, the 11th-most by an MSU player during the freshman and sophomore seasons.
He was named to the All-SEC Second Team last year after scoring 528 points, the sixth-most by a sophomore in school history, while also becoming just one of 11 players nationally to score at least 500 points and dish out at least 100 assists. He finished as only one of three players in the conference to rank in the top 15 in scoring average, assists per game, steals per game, 20-point games, assist-to-turnover ratio, field goal percentage and free throw percentage.
Additionally, the two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection scored a season-high 32 points against Dayton on Dec. 12 to become just the 13th sophomore in school history since 1954 to post a 30-point game and was the only player in program history to record three consecutive 20-point games during postseason play.

MSU sets cross country schedule
A four-race regular-season slate will prepare Mississippi State’s cross country team for the SEC Championship on Oct. 29.
MSU opens the season Sept. 4 at the Memphis Twilight Classic, returning to the event at which the Bulldogs placed second in 2016 and fourth in 2018. Later that month, State will travel to Huntsville, Alabama, for the North Alabama Showcase. The same course will host this year’s South Region Championships.
For the third time in the past four years, MSU is headed to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete in the Live in Lou Classic on Oct. 2. Two weeks later, State makes the journey to Princeton, New Jersey, for the Princeton Invite on Oct. 16.
The postseason begins Oct. 29 with the SEC Championships hosted by the University of Missouri in Columbia. In November, State will return to Huntsville to compete at the South Region Championships for the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championship in Tallahassee, Florida, on Nov. 20.
“We have a very young, talented bunch of young women this year that we are excited about,” Bulldogs cross country coach Chris Woods said. “This competitive schedule allows them to get a solid experience of what it is like to compete at this level as we navigate our way to the conference championship meet in late October.”
