STARKVILLE — Mississippi State announced the hiring of Kyle Cornelius as an assistant coach this week, joining the men’s golf coaching staff under head coach Dusty Smith.

Only two years removed from being a student-athlete himself, Cornelius made a big impression at each of his last two stops before making the move to the Southeastern Conference.
“First, I want to thank Dusty for this opportunity,” Cornelius said in a university release. “He has built one of the best programs in the country, and I’m super excited to be a part of it. I can already tell he has put together a great culture here, and it is easy to see why he is great at what he does. I’m looking forward to getting to Starkville and getting to work.”
Cornelius joins the Bulldogs after a year on staff at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While with the 49ers the program claimed three top-five finishes at team events. It was his first job as an assistant after one year at Troy University as a graduate assistant.
In his time at Troy the men’s golf program reached the National Golf Invitational postseason tournament and appeared in the Sun Belt Conference Championships for the first time in six years.
“We are so excited to welcome Kyle into our golf program,” Smith said of the new hire. “Kyle is one of the bright young coaches in our profession right now that is going to bring us so much positive energy, an incredible work ethic and a standard of excellence. He is going to be a great addition to the culture that has been created here. I am looking forward to working with him, learning from him and continuing to build the program into what we know it can be.”
As a player at Troy, Cornelius held a 74.81 scoring average and posted two top 10 finishes in the 2021-22 season, and was named as a Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar.
