COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women student-athlete Allen Fields was selected as the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week on Monday after a standout performance at the Samford Open and KMS Invitational track and field meets over the weekend.
Fields, a sophomore hurdler, took .24 off of his previous record in the 60-meter hurdle in a race on Saturday, then took another fraction of a second off on Sunday for a school record time of 9.25 seconds. His previous record was 9.50, which he set in a fourth-place finish at the 2024 SLIAC Indoor Track and Field championships.
The time is currently the best in SLIAC for the 60-meter hurdle event.
“This is an award well-deserved for Allen,” MUW track and field head coach Dedrick Burnett said in a university release. “We have made so much progress since last season. Coming off a great weekend with two personal bests in the hurdles and posting the number one time in the conference, got to feel good for him and will boost his confidence.”
The Saltillo native is in his second season with the Owls after a noteworthy freshman year. His best finish came at the SLIAC Outdoor Track and Field championships, setting a time of 16.74 in the 110-meter hurdle to finish in second place.
Fields and the MUW track and field team will return to action on Feb. 8 at the UAB Green and Gold Invitational in Birmingham.
