Believes supervisor Brooks deserves criticism too
The last few months I have endured this nonstop drama that reinforces the idea this is a third world country. The Imes have reported on this city’s history and local politics for years and for some reason, I have watched this paper become nothing more than an AP liberal sounding board.
Journalism has died in our society. A press that allows for equal opposing thoughts and real investigation of people’s allegations is essential. This paper would garner respect and knowledge if it were open and honest. So, as I write this, I am going to set some things straight with this feud between Harry and Leroy that has gone on for years and really has nothing to do with Harry’s racist rant this summer.
Harry probably believes what he said, but Leroy has done and said things just as bad. When District 4 fire department wanted a second station near Plymouth Bluff, Leroy said even though they were in his district he did not care what they wanted or needed because they were all rich white people. There was no outcry from Harry or this community because it was Leroy being Leroy. Leroy’s statements were not used to push an agenda like Harry’s were this summer.
Leroy stands on his soapbox stating he will not work with Harry. In the almost 18 years I have lived here Leroy has repeatedly been the least accommodating member. I watched Leroy read a newspaper while experts spoke to the board on a subject he didn’t agree with.
Leroy throws the premise that Harry has repeatedly blocked a Black member of being offered the position of President ever. In 2001, 2004, 2008 and 2012, Leroy was nominated for president of the board of supervisors and each time he eventually declined the nomination, stating he stood no chance of getting it.
Leroy has blocked and delayed projects because it benefited a different district, I heard him say publicly people who live in Caledonia are all Klan members, and when he was asked to attend a meeting in Caledonia about a project for water treatment needs to explain his concerns of cost and impact he refused because he said he will not go there after dark because of the Klan.
Mr. Imes, be inclusive, offer some conservative opinion writers to let the readers decide for themselves and learn the other opinions. Open eyes to see life good or bad. Teach these young writers to get history on these drama queens before stirring and setting the city on fire with outside groups that just want to stir up. Let outsiders see a southern charm and relaxed community that is open to all people of this nation.
