Optimistic about our ability to defeat virus
We humans are exposed to multiple different type of diseases and sicknesses, but corona virus disease turns out to be the queen of all diseases. This virus has imprisoned the entire world, a situation that was never experienced by anyone who is living today. It has halted the world’s economy, businesses, transportation, sporting events, and overall social interactions. Only thing that this virus couldn’t do is to stop our communication ability. Halting communication is the job of a different type of virus, that is computer virus. Just like our computer engineers protect our communication by tackling computer virus, soon we biologists will find a cure to destroy this biological virus. This virus has firmly proven that it is one of the most powerful and dangerous enemies of mankind. We can take pride in reaching the Moon and Mars and mapping the entire human genome, but when it comes to dealing with this pandemic, we are feeling like we’re back in the stone age.
The most surprising thing, however, is that United States being the most wealthy, powerful, and innovative nation on the Earth has also succumbed to this invisible organism. A nation that produces the most Noble prizes, and where almost all discoveries are made, from software to hardware and from pin to airplanes, also seems to be helpless. A nation who is a guide to the world in almost all walks of life, today is leading the world in number of deaths due to corona virus. It is puzzling that our health care workers are losing their lives simply because they don’t have adequate supply of masks and other personal protective equipment. If our nation didn’t depend too much on other countries especially China for supply of our basic needs, and had local industries making them, and our leaders took the right decisions, probably we wouldn’t be losing this many precious lives. I am fully optimistic that soon we will defeat this virus by social distancing and eliminate it with our scientific innovations. Once we win this battle, I sincerely hope that our leaders will realize the value of timely decisions and home-grown products in dealing with the future catastrophes.
