Hopes for better year and for more information out of China
Last year around this time, I was excited and ready to embrace the year 2020 primarily because of its numbers and the way it sounds. I told my optician daughter-in-law in Dallas jokingly that the year 2020 can be a special year for her practice and provide a good vision of 20/20 to all her patients. On the contrary, the year 2020 tuned out to be detrimental for the entire world. Coronavirus snatched happiness, health, freedom, progress, and livelihood of millions of people around the world. It has severely affected the economy and education everywhere. As the year is ending the lethal effects of COVID-19 are on the all-time high. Scientists all over the world worked around the clock to come up with several vaccines in a record time, that we all are hoping can put a lid on this deadly virus soon. Throughout the year as we turned our TVs on, all we heard — and are hearing now — is the number of COVID cases, death toll, and progress in vaccine development in different parts of the world. “COVID-19,” “social-distancing,” “mask” and “vaccine” became some of the keywords for the year 2020.
Initially the focus was on China, where this virus originated. But now it is very surprising that China is no more in the news when it comes to this virus. No one knows what is happening in China today in terms of COVID cases, its current death toll, and vaccination of people there. Did they develop their own vaccine before anyone did, and as a result they could control this virus? Media is completely silent, social media and politicians are also silent when it comes to the current status of COVID in China. Since this virus has disrupted so many lives, resulting in the loss of trillions of dollars in the economy world over, it is obvious that people want to know what is happening in China today, where not only this virus originated but is also the home of most people in any single country on the earth. As we are ready to welcome 2021, let’s hope that sour memories of 2020 soon will be a thing of the past.
