A rose to organizers and vendors at our two major community markets. The Hitching Lot Farmers Market in Columbus and the Starkville Community Market are now open, providing a wide array of fruits, vegetables, baked goods, artisan products and craft. The opening of these markets is a harbinger of the summer growing season and patrons look forward, in particular, to the first ripe tomatoes and watermelons. In addition to the expected fresh produce, both markets have a nice selection of goods made by children this year. We congratulate the markets and encourage patrons to consider the markets: they are hyper local ways to shop.
A rose to the city of Columbus as it prepares for a half-million-dollar renovation at The Trotter Center. The funds come from the city’s 2% hotel tax. In past years, updates for the Trotter Center were rare, so it’s nice to note the more recent trend of keeping the event center up-to-date and inviting. By the end of the year, the now-carpeted corridor leading to the Trotter Convention Center’s auditorium will feature marbled flooring, ambient lighting and elegant drapery. Inside the auditorium, a fresh coat of paint will complement a newly installed chandelier. The city is working with JBHM Architecture on the interior design aspects of the project. The renovation will begin in the next few months, but its start date isn’t set in stone. The Trotter Center has been an integral part of the city’s entertainment and tourism efforts, so taking care of the property is essential.
A rose to the Mississippi State women’s golf team, which for the third consecutive year, advances to the national championship tournament. The Bulldogs backed up their first-ever Southeastern Conference title with a fourth-place finish at the Bermuda Run (N.C.) regional in North Carolina, which punched their ticket to the championship in Carlsbad, California, which began Friday. Charlie Ewing has now guided MSU to the biggest stage in women’s college golf in each of his three full seasons as head coach. Ole Miss, which won the same regional MSU played, is also in the championship tournament field.
