A rose to everyone on this Easter weekend, which is the biggest holiday that isn’t actually a federal holiday. Half of the U.S. population attends church services on Easter, which is two-to-three times larger than typical Sunday service attendance. Brunches and backyard barbecues are popular on the holiday. Easter egg hunts are available almost everywhere in the U.S. Easter is also a welcome sign of spring weather. So however you celebrate it, Happy Easter!
A rose to Visit Columbus and the Preservation Society and Historic Home Tours as they present the 86th Columbus Spring Festival, which coincides with Columbus’ 86th Spring Pilgrimage. Eighteen pre-Civil War homes will be part of the tour, which begins Tuesday and runs through April 18. Candlelight tours are returning for the first time in years and will be hosted at Shadowlawn and the Chandler Beckett House. In conjunction with the Pilgrimage The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science will present its award-winning Tales From the Crypt at Friendship Cemetery with performances April 8, 10, 15, 17. Much like Easter, the Pilgrimage is something we associate with the arrival of spring.
A rose to the West Lowndes community, which has formed a group to raise money for the needs of West Lowndes students. Members of the newly formed West Lowndes Community Outreach organization have helped raise more than $14,000 to fund student needs at West Lowndes Elementary and High schools. It’s an effort led entirely by community members aiming to give back to West Lowndes schools by providing “whatever they might” to ensure each child is a productive student, Fred Tolon, coordinator for the group, said. The group was born out of conversations with school administrators about what needs students have, ranging from financial aid to life skills development to mentorship and a five-member committee has been formed to disperse the funds. It’s a financial shot in the arm for the district, certainly, but the greater value is knowing the schools and students have the community behind them.
