A rose to the hundreds of residents who turned out Tuesday for the official opening of the BankFirst Yards Sportsplex in west Lowndes County. The $12 million project, funded by Lowndes County taxpayers, includes a combined eight baseball and softball fields. The opening comes two years after work began on the complex. Additional phases are planned to add other amenities. It remains an open question how many people will participate in county leagues once all phases of the project are complete, but if the turnout for Tuesday’s ceremonies is any indication, the prospects are promising. Hundreds gathered at the facility, quickly filling all parking spaces at the complex. The overflow parking was directed to a site on the south side of Hwy. 82 and was bussed to the sportsplex. BankFirst signed on as the facility’s title sponsor, committing $250,000 over 10 years that will help defray operational costs at the park. The public-private partnerships with BankFirst and 4-County and the county are a show of confidence in the future of the park, as is the large number of residents who turned out for Tuesday’s opening ceremonies.
A rose to the city of Starkville, which was chosen by USA Today’s readers as “Best Small Town the South” for 2024. About 20 years ago, the city began to become known derisively as “Starkvegas,” a bit of satire that focused on the town’s lack of amenities and attractions. Over the years, Starkville began to embrace the name as the city began to blossom, in large part to tapping into the success of Mississippi State’s athletic programs, which continue to be an economic driver. As the city continues to grow and prosper, “Starkvegas” is no longer a mocking term, as evidenced by the results of this reader poll. Starkville topped small-town destinations such as Batesville, Ark., Thomasville, Ga., West Monroe, La., and Maysville, Ky., for the top spot. Although MSU is an enormous influence, USA Today editors noted that Starkville is more than just a college town. Its arts scene, restaurants and well-maintained public spaces set Starkville apart. We are pleased the city is being recognized as a great place to live, work, learn and play. This honor is a source of pride for all who call Starkville their home.
A rose to the Mississippi State women’s golf team, which captured its first Southeastern Conference Championship Tuesday defeating 17th-ranked and defending champion Texas A&M, 3-2, in match play in Bellaire, Florida. The win for the unranked Bulldogs was sweet redemption after losing to the same Aggies team in the finals last year. Led by junior Julia Lopez Ramirez, who secured back-to-back individual SEC titles over the weekend, the Bulldogs also got match play wins from sophomore Izzy Pellot and freshman Avery Weed in winning their championship matchups on Tuesday. The league title assures MSU of another berth in the NCAA Championships, where regional play begins May 6 at six sites followed by the championship tournament featuring the top 30 from regional play from May 17-22 in Carlsbad, California. Congratulations, Bulldogs on this historic achievement.
