A rose to Starkville Strong and Worker Bees, which have organized a food drive where people can donate their Christmas leftovers to those in need. Saturday from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. donated food items can be dropped off at Worker Bees, 504 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Volunteers will collect those leftovers at repacking the food into meals for those in need. It is estimated that 25% of the food purchased for the Christmas Holiday in the US goes to waste. This is good food that could go to the hungry in our community. We urge everyone to participate in this food drive.
A rose to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks for providing an opportunity for area residents to start the new year off on the right foot (pardon the pun). The MDWFP has organized a pair of walks on Jan. 1 at Lake Lowndes Park with routes that cover 3.5 miles and seven miles. Admission is free with park entry. Simply show up during the day and start hiking. For more information, contact Penny Wyers at [email protected], or call 662-328-2110. Studies show that walking even as little as 30 minutes a day can aid weight loss, strengthen the heart, ease joint pain and boost immunity. Walking truly benefits all of us and we urge citizens to take advantage of this opportunity to spend some time at Lake Lowndes.
A rose to all of the people in our community who sacrifice holiday time at home with their families to provide the services we all rely on. While the holidays are a time for most of us to focus on homes and families, there are many whose jobs require them to work. Police, firefighters, doctors, nurses, EMTs, utility workers and others are on the job to keep us all safe and secure through the holiday season. We can all enjoy the holiday season knowing these folks are on the job. We applaud all of these people for their selfless service.
