Have you heard the old axiom, You get out of something what you put into it? When I moved to Columbus a little more than three years ago, I knew I wanted to invest my time and resources in my new hometown. One of my new friends mentioned a group called 100 Women Who Care. She explained that this group held a giving circle twice a year and the only commitment from members was to give $100 in the fall and $100 in the spring. She said that members would nominate local non-profit organizations, three would be randomly selected as finalists, then the members would vote for an organization to receive the funds collected. I was very impressed by the simplicity of this process and the generosity of these women without any expectation other than to help their community. It was a no-brainer for me to join this group and chip in to help my new community.
A few months later, I was invited to The Rotary Club of Columbus for a meeting, not realizing at the time, that Rotary is another group that extends a similar generosity. After joining Rotary, I began to hear guest speakers from many organizations in the area like Sunshine Stables, a non-profit providing adaptive and non-adaptive horse experiences. Anna Brown told us how working with horses made her clients’ eyes light up and helped them gain a sense of independence. She told us of a special young client who had lost a parent and was visiting the stable, not riding, just grooming and walking one special horse. It was the transformation and healing that she and her horse helped to facilitate that stuck with me almost two years before I submitted Sunshine Stables for the 2024 100 Women Who Care Spring Giving Circle.
Since there are always dozens of nominees placed in a barrel and only three are chosen, I did not expect my first time making a nomination would result in a finalist. You can imagine my surprise when I got the call. After going out to the barn on a crisp spring day to record a video about Anna’s non-profit, the members voted. I was so very grateful when Sunshine Stables was chosen as the 100 Women Who Care Spring Impact Recipient. Anna Brown’s organization was awarded $19,000 to continue upgrading their facilities and expanding their reach. Clearly, 100 Women Who Care has grown beyond 100 women and continues to grow. I encourage anyone who wants to invest in our community to consider joining us – I promise you will get much more out of this experience than you will invest.
