Jiben Roy is as near to a friend as I have among The W faculty. He is a genuinely caring and peaceful man. His letters have both moved and instructed me. I fear his retirement may lead to his moving away.
In his letter on Tuesday, Dr. Roy wrote that President Trump had brokered a ceasefire in the India-Pakistan conflict. Given Donald’s success in Gaza and in Ukraine, I was amazed, so I checked the news. India says Donald’s trade threats had nothing to do with pausing the conflict. They also rebuffed his interference in Jammu and Kashmir — the disputed regions behind the conflict. President Trump likes to take credit, especially when it costs him nothing.
Dr. Roy is wrong about being retired; it does not happen until the end of the week. He is also wrong about the president’s influence. Usually Dr. Roy is almost disturbingly insightful, so this is a sad farewell for him. I am sure that once he officially retires all that insight will return. I will miss him when he is gone.
