I have wondered why Donald Trump has been deferring (may I say, obsequiously?) to Elon Musk. The only thing I can think is that President Trump imagines that Mr. Musk will usher him into a third term as president. I am sure that the president has watched as Mr. Putin, Mr. Orban, Mr. Erdogan, and others altered their constitutions to allow them to rule for life, and he imagines that a supine congress will alter ours to his benefit. This, of course, requires supine state legislatures as well, but who knows?
Why would a man who demands an eternal spotlight on himself tolerate a distracting presence like Mr. Musk, except for personal ambition?
It will be interesting to see who introduces the constitutional amendment. Hopefully not Cindy Hyde-Smith.
