We would like to commend Sheriff Eddie Hawkins and his experienced staff of investigators who worked the Devion Bankhead/Columbus Police Department Case. Normally we are quick to assign blame to law enforcement agencies for a multitude of past and present wrongs but rarely do we go out of our way to thank them for what they do right. In this particular instance obviously there were no stones left unturned and the blue wall of silence broken. They quickly got to the facts of the case by examining the officer’s body cam and his vehicle’s black box which contained indisputable data that couldn’t be refuted. They also did live interviews in real time immediately after the incident at the hospital to get their firsthand accounts of their version of the events and that was when things began to go south. For whatever reason and I’m not one to jump to any conclusions on why they said what they did but they lied plain and simple. It could have been to cover up a routine call for backup gone horribly wrong, job security, city liability or a combination of all of the above. That we may never know and then again we just might with the work that was meticulously done by our Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department.
