The proposal to renew the tax cuts from ten years ago will, according to the Treasury Department, save the richest .1% of taxpayers an average of $314,266—the richest one in a thousand. It will save the richest .01% (one in ten thousand) over 8 million dollars. The next order of magnitude will save nearly a billion dollars. A Democratic amendment to limit the tax cuts to people making less than a billion dollars in taxable income did not get a single Republican vote. Not one. The tax cut will save me an estimated $8.63—less if I am charitable.
To pay for this largess to people who absolutely do not need it, the GOP bill will devastate Medicaid. I know that, in Mississippi, Medicaid, which mostly helps African-Americans—they being the bulk of our poor—is generally unpopular, but there are plenty of poor white folks all over the country who will also lose any access to health care.
Is this what we really want?
