It was refreshing to hear Councilman Rusty Greene’s comments, in hindsight, about leaving the contentious executive session to hire a new fire chief. We all have made mistakes and come short of His glory, so let’s not act as though we have not done something that we regret later. I’m sure if he had it to do all over again, he would approach the matter differently and with more patience and understanding. Now is the time for healing, oneness and reconciliation, not further division and squabbling over a decision that was rendered by the majority present who cast their vote. The process, as it played out, could have been handled better from all sides, and going forward, let this be a teachable moment that they all can learn from. I tend to agree with the statement made by Councilman Gary Jefferson that even though he may be one of the new members, he can still learn a lot from the returning members, Ethel Stewart and Rusty Greene, who have been there the longest. I wish them all the best in their continued efforts to work alongside our Mayor, Stephen Jones, whether you supported him or not. He is trying to do what’s in the best interest of this great city. In closing, may the Good Lord continue to bless and cover the City of Columbus, Mississippi, the Friendly City.
