The army of Ukraine is striking targets in Kursk, in Russia. It occurs to me that there might be a symbolic reason for this attack. In 1943, the Soviet Union defeated the German army in the biggest battle in the history of warfare at Kursk. Tens of thousands of tanks were involved. There was also a massive air battle. The Soviet victory allowed their forces to counter-attack into Ukraine.
To force an incursion into the territory that, according to many military historians, essentially defeated Hitler, is a brutal slap in the face to Vladimir Putin. We would do well to see that that slap continues to sting.
