Voter confusion can impact voter participation. The Columbus City Council hired a consulting firm to redraw the wards resulting from required redistricting, following the 2020 Census. The City Council deferred finalizing the redistricting plan, which may have affected political competitors’ understanding of where the ward lines would be drawn. Additionally, the City Council did not hold a public forum that could have revealed the reasons behind the ward line decisions. Further, the new wards were so weakly drawn to redistribute population that rejiggering again will be required after the next census.
In September 2024, after completing the redistricting, the City Council did not thoroughly consider polling locations. As a result, Columbus has a single polling location in one of the largest geographic wards, Ward 6, and two polling locations in the smallest geographic ward, Ward 2. Ward 3 features two large incongruent areas requiring the councilman to travel outside his ward. Wards 1 and 4 have three polling locations each, some in relatively close proximity. The interactive ward map on the City’s website shows polling locations, some of which are situated at the edges of the wards rather than centrally located.
Columbus has 13 polling locations for its six wards, while Starkville has only five polling locations for its seven wards. Lowndes County has a total of 20 polling locations, with 10 in the city. The city and county voters may be assigned to different precincts for city versus county elections, contributing to confusion.
Additionally, certain precinct names reported in the State Election Management System (SEMS) differ from their actual names. For example, “Stephen Chapel Life Center” is listed as “Hunt,” and “Boy Scout Hut” is listed as “University” and is no longer a Boy Scout Hut, rather, part of the Farmers Market facility.
It is hoped that future members of the city council will prioritize fair elections, transparency and accountability. A new legal advisor focused on ethical and competent operations could help achieve this goal.
