I applaud Dr. Jiben Roy for his thoughtful article (Sept. 17) about the prevalence of gun violence in the United States. The rush to a firearm to solve a dispute or articulate a grievance seems to be a growing trend among all classes of our citizenry, everywhere, concomitant with improved technology and greater availability of weapons.
In our history, however, firearms use for many purposes has been historic, even celebrated. Hunting, collecting, sharpshooting and displaying with firearms always have engaged many of us. And the elements of danger and risk may have enhanced the attention.
But Dr. Roy’s column continues the call for concern and repeats the question, “Why now?”
