I write today to discuss your recent Our View editorial that questioned the relevance of the Columbus mayor attending a Summit Against Antisemitism. Your instinct to scrutinize expenditures of tax revenue is valid and welcome. Indeed, part of the function of the press is to monitor our government and elected officials.
However, your reasoning for singling out a particular expenditure, especially one you call trifling, is troubling. You state that this conference is “about as relevant to our community as traveling to a ski lodge convention.”While Columbus does not, has not, and will not have a ski lodge, the same cannot be said about antisemitism in the city and surrounding areas.
One event that affected our local Jewish population is the bomb threat received by the Columbus synagogue in December of 2023. This of course made us all recall the bombing of the Jackson synagogue in 1967. There was also the incident, in October 2024, where a Tupelo public park was defaced with graffiti that included a swastika. In November 2024, a Hattiesburg man was sentenced for cyberstalking and antisemitic harassment. In February of this year, your paper covered the proposal for a new high school facility. A prominent feature of the design, printed for all to see, was a building clearly in the shape of a swastika.
Further, it has been shown that many other forms of violence and property crimes are connected to antisemitism. Therefore, educating city leadership, and the public as a whole, about this issue may also prevent or decrease other types of crime.
Looking at the agenda of the Summit Against Antisemitism for the last two years, I found they cover such topics as Ensuring Safe Communities, Communication Strategies for Diverse Constituencies, Athletics as a Unifying Force Between Communities, and Essential Strategies for Mayors in Law Enforcement. These topics seem like a good use of a trifling amount of gas money for the mayor to be informed about, and would certainly have a tangible benefit for the city. In fact, we hope the mayor will visit with our community to share with us any insight he received at the conference.
