William Stallworth

William King Stallworth, M.D., died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Hospice of Charleston on May 25, 2010. Bill was born in 1929 to Hester King and William Lea Stallworth, M.D., and grew up in Columbus, MS. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served as an infantryman and forward observer in the Second Marine Division during the Korean War. Days after his discharge, he married Jean Yarbrough of Indianola, MS. Bill graduated from Millsaps College, Jackson, MS, with a B.S. in Chemistry. He earned his M.D. from Tulane Medical School where he was a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity and served as Class Representative in the Owls’ Club, a student government body. He and his family remained in New Orleans for a four-year internship and residency specialty in Obstetrics and Gynecology, before moving to Charlotte, NC where he practiced Ob-Gyn for 30 years. He was Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Presbyterian Hospital and was particularly proud of being made an Honorary Member of Presbyterian Hopsital’s Student Nursing School. He was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. After retiring in 2003, Bill and Jean moved to Franke at Seaside in Mt. Pleasant, SC. To know Bill was to love him, he was a deeply compassionate man and a true Southern Gentleman with a great wit. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed flying his Comanche Piper, fishing, hunting, racing cars and playing golf. He was a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church and Myers Park Country Club, Charlotte, NC., He could often be seen working on his boat at Wild Dunes where he was a member. He was also a member of the South Carolina Saltwater Sportsfishing Association (SCSSA). His greatest passion was his family. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Jean; daughters Lea Moore and husband Jim of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Nancy Montague of Charlotte, NC; and Sara Schmidt and husband Michael of Charleston, SC. Bill was lovingly called “Gramps” by his grandchildren: Jimmy Moore, Kingslea Moore, Lea Montague, Ian Schmidt and William Schmidt. He is also survived by his siblings Nancy and her husband Sellers J. Thomas, M.D., Houston, TX; Alice and her husband the Hon. Robert L. Lancaster, Columbus, MS; John C. Stallworth, M.D. and wife Pamela, Littleton, CO; and Clementine de Roode, Huntsville, AL. As well as many adoring nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and a great-great niece and a great-great nephew. A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at Alhambra Hall, 131 Middle Street, Mt. Pleasant, on May 29th, 2010 at 10:30am followed by a Reception. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
